National Hero IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was captivated by Pakistan Army after his MiG-21 was shot down by Pakistan Air Force in February, Abhinandan Varthaman will be awarded the “Vir Chakra” award medal on Independence Day, as per media sources. Vir Chakra is an Indian gallantry award presented for acts of bravery on the battlefield. It is third in precedence in the wartime gallantry awards and comes after the “Param Vir Chakra” and “Maha Vir Chakra.”
Wing Commander Varthaman emerged a national hero after he shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet on February 27 during a near the Line of Control(LOC). He was captured by Pakistani forces and returned to India three days later, after mounting pressure globally on March 1.
Abhinandan Varthaman, 36, is likely to rejoin his pilot job after clearing some medical tests. He had suffered injuries after ejecting from his damaged plane. Wing Commander Varthaman said Pakistani authorities did not physically torture him but he was subjected to some mental stress.
