In the last two years, the Locusts panic has suddenly started making headlines in India. Even today, a locust team is going from Pakistan to Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. Locusts that were destroying crops also entered Uttar Pradesh. However, with the wind blowing, the entire team has once again turned towards Madhya Pradesh. After all, where have the grasshoppers come from in such a large number and where is their original place? Are they originating in Pakistan itself? The answer is no.
IFS Pravin Kaswan explains that the main reasons behind the locust floods are the Mekunu and Luban cyclones that hit Gulf countries, Oman, and Yemen in May and October 2018. He quoted experts as saying that those cyclonic storms created such seasonal conditions in which the number of locusts increased immensely.
He tweeted, ‘According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecast, horrific conditions have arisen in Africa about desert locusts. There is still crop sowing season, with it, locusts have started laying eggs. Therefore, if grasshoppers are born in record numbers then they will turn east for food. ‘ This means that in the coming days, locusts can take terror and frightful form.
This time desert locust attack is severe. They have arrived earlier, in huge numbers & now reached till Panna in MP. The changing climate conditions are linked with locust growth in east Africa. The swarms has potential of eating everything & destroy the crops. This from Panna. pic.twitter.com/8aqLa8lA4O
