After being stable for about 50 days, the price of diesel went up by ₹7.10 a litre in Delhi and that of petrol by ₹1.67 per litre today after the Delhi government increased value-added tax (VAT) on the two auto fuels. In recent days this was a massive increase in petrol and diesel prices. The consumer now has to shell out Rs 71.26 and Rs 69.39 for every litre of petrol and diesel respectively.
Fuel prices vary from state to state in the country based on factors such as local taxes and dealer commission. The base prices of petrol and diesel are Rs. 27.96 and Rs. 31.49 respectively as per IOCL.
The government’s decision comes as the state struggles to meet its expenditure amid the lockdown imposed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The government added that once the revenue stabilizes, it will revise this levy.
