Rare Polka-Dotted Zebra Spotted In Kenya
A rare polka-dotted zebra spotted in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. As per reports the rare zebra, with spots instead of stripes, was first photographed by Antony Tira a famous tour guide and wildlife photographer at Maasai park.
Antony Tira told media that he was confused when he first saw the newborn zebra and thought it had been painted or marked for purposes of migration. He named the baby zebra as Tira.
Tira’s odd look is the first recorded observation in the Masai Mara of a condition called Pseudomelanism, according to the National Geographic. It is a rare genetic mutation in which animals display some sort of abnormality in their stripe pattern. The genetic abnormality linked to the build-up of dark pigmented melanin in the skin.
Parmale Lemein, a wildlife specialist at Matira Camp said that such cases do not survive for more than six months after birth.
